Agreeing and disagreeing

Here are some expressions you can use to agree and disagree. You will need to use these expressions in a discussion activity.

Pronunciation

"Tch" Sound

The "tch" sound is a combination of /t/ and /ʃ/ (which is the "sh" sound). It often occurs in words that end in -tch, and the sound is usually "ch" like in the word "chocolate."

Examples:

• Match (m-ATCH)
• Watch (w-ATCH)
• Catch (c-ATCH)
• Pitch (p-ITCH)

"Scr" Sound

The "scr" cluster is pronounced with a /sk/ sound followed by the /r/ sound. The "s" is pronounced like the "s" in "sea", followed by the "c" like in "cat", and then the "r" sound.

Examples:

• Scrap (SKR-ap)
• Scream (SKR-ee-m)
• Scroll (SKR-ohl)
• Scrunch (SKR-uh-nch)

"Str" Sound

The "str" cluster has a /s/ sound followed by a /t/ sound, then an /r/ sound. It’s one of the most common clusters in English.
Pronunciation: /str/ (like "st" + "r")

Examples:

• Street (STR-eet)
• Strong (STR-ong)
• Strategy (STR-at-uh-jee)
• Stretch (STR-etch)

"Spr" Sound

The "spr" cluster is similar to "str", but starts with an /sp/ sound, followed by /r/. It often appears at the beginning of words.

Examples:

• Spring (SP-ring)
• Spray (SP-ray)
• Sprinkle (SP-ring-kul)
