Simple past tense (lesson 3+4)
The simple past is a verb tense that is used to talk about things that happened before now ( in the past)
Regular verbs, add -ed to the root form of the verb
Cook→ cooked
Play→played
Dance→ danced
Travel→ travelled
Try→ tried
Irregular verbs
go→went
buy→bought
see→saw
Negative form: (did not + [root form of verb]. ( didn’t instead of did not).
I helped my mum→I didn’t help my mum
We went to the park→We didn’t go to the park.
Question form: (did + subject+ root form of verb.)
Did you help your mum?
Did you go to the park?
Time adverbials:
The simple past tense is commonly used with time expressions referring to the past. Examples are: yesterday, last year, ago, in 2006 etc.
