Here are the main story elements you should know:

  • Characters: These are the people, animals, or creatures in the story. They have their own personalities, motivations (reasons for doing things), and often change or learn something throughout the story.

    • Think about: Who are the main characters? What are they like? What do they want? How do they act?

  • Setting: This is where and when the story takes place. It includes the location, time period, and even the atmosphere or mood of the story. The setting can influence the characters and the events.

    • Think about: Where does the story happen? When does it happen? What does the place look and feel like?

  • Plot: This is the sequence of events that make up the story. It's what happens from the beginning to the end. A typical plot includes:

    • Beginning/Exposition: Introduces the characters and setting and often hints at the conflict.
    • Rising Action: The events that build suspense and lead to the climax. This is where the main problems and challenges occur.
    • Climax: The most exciting or important part of the story, where the main conflict reaches its peak.
    • Falling Action: The events that happen after the climax, leading towards the resolution.
    • Resolution/Conclusion: The end of the story, where the main conflict is usually resolved, and we learn what happens to the characters.

  • Conflict: This is the main problem or struggle in the story. It can be:

    • Internal Conflict: A struggle within a character's own mind (e.g., deciding what's right).
    • External Conflict: A struggle between a character and an outside force, such as another character, nature, or society.
    • Think about: What is the main problem in the story? Who or what is the character struggling against?

  • Theme: This is the underlying message or lesson the author wants to share with the reader. It's the big idea or meaning of the story. Themes are often about life, human nature, or society.

    • Think about: What is the author trying to tell us about life or people? What is the main idea you take away from the story?
