2. Read Abbas’s photo blog. What do you think the special occasion is? Discuss in groups.

3. Read the blog again. Say who people 1–4 are, using the family words from the box.

Present Simple and Present Continuous

present simple: is a verb tense that allows us to talk about things that are generally true or habitual actions in the present. it like describing the simple things in life!

زمن المضارع البسيط يستخدم للتعبير عن (الروتين، و الحقائق المثبته، والحقائق العلمية  لا يمكن انكارها).

key wordsAlways , often , usually , Never , Ever , sometimes , Every , Normally

 

structure:

Form:

تركيب جمل المضارع البسيط

• Affirmative    الجملة المثبتة  

(I – We – You – They) + V1

(He – She – It) + Vs (we add –s) run – runs, eat – eats.
    (we add –es when verb ends in ss, sh, ch, x, z, o) fix- fixes, go – goes 
         (when the verb ends in consonant + y) cry – cries, study – studies 
     (we add s when the verb end in vowels + y) play – plays 
Example
- she sleeps 
- I sleep

 

present continuous: present continuous tense is used to describe actions that are happening at the moment of speaking.

 يستخدم الزمن الحاضر المستمر لوصف الأفعال التي تحدث في لحظة الكلام

key words: At this moment, At present, now, currently, still.
imperative:  look, listen, don’t! watchout! Be!

 

structure:

The present continuous tense is formed using the auxiliary verb "to be" (am, is, are) followed by the present participle (the -ing form) of the main verb.

يتكون الفعل المستمر باستخدم الفعل المساعد للفعل الرئيسي 

 

Am

For the first-person 

singular (I)

is

For singular subjects

(he, she, it)

Are

For plural subjects

(you, we, they)


 

Affirmative جملة مثبته
Subject + to be + base + ing
He is watching.
Negative جملة نفي
Subject + to be + not + base + ing
He is not (isn't) Watching
Interrogative جملة استفهامية
to be + subject + base + ing
Is he Watching?

4. Match sentences 1–4 with their meanings a–d.

صل الجمل من 1 إلى 4 مع معانيها a-d.

  1. It sometimes rains in April. (d)
  2. It isn’t raining this morning. (c)
  3. My sister and I often argue. (a)
  4. Osama is staying with us. (d)

a. a habit or routine 
b. a fact that doesn’t change 
c. something happening now

Present Simple and Present Continuous

We use the Present Simple for:

نستخدم "الحاضر البسيط" من أجل

facts that don’t change

routines and habits

Time expressions:  تعبيرات الوقت      

 never, hardly ever, sometimes, often, usually, every day/ week, most days

We use the Present Continuous for:  نستخدم "المضارع المستمر "من اجل

things happening now

temporary situations

Time expressions:  تعبيرات الوقت     

at the moment, (right) now, these days, today, this morning/year

WATCH OUT!                                        انتبه! 
With action verbs, we use simple and continuous tenses:
مع الأفعال، نستعمل الأفعال البسيطة والمستمرة:
 She speaks three languages. She’s speaking to me now. With state verbs (e.g. agree, believe, hate, know, like, love, mean, see, taste, think, want), we only use simple tenses: It tastes great. NOT It is tasting great

 

6.Complete the conversation with the correct Present Simple or Present Continuous forms of the verbs from the box. Listen and check.

 Muna Yes, I 5 thinks so too. Does she live in Amman? 
Salwa No, she usually lives in Irbid, but she 6 is studying in France at the moment.
