LESSON 4A GRAMMAR

Relative Clauses

• we use defining relative clause to give essential information about someone or something- information that we need in order to understand what or who is being referred to 

• A defining relative clause usually comes immediately after the noun it describe  


look at the following examples:                      

The woman who lives next door works in a school. 
• She's the woman who cuts my hair.
• He's a musician whose albums have sold millions.
The weather that we had this summer was beautiful.

To form relative Clauses we use relative pronouns: 

WHO It is use to refer to people

Which It is use to refer to animals and objects

Whose It is use to refer to possession 

That It is use to refer to people, animals. 
              It can replace WHO or WHICH 

Where It is use to refer to place 

When It is use to refer to time 


subject or object 

the relative pronoun can define the subject or the object of the verb: 

1- The woman who lives next door works in a school. (The woman is the subject)

2- She's the woman who cuts my hair. ( the woman is the subject)

3- She's the woman whose hair I cut. (the woman is the object)
