1. Need to

Used for necessity or obligation (similar to "must", but slightly weaker).

Affirmative:

Subject + need to + base verb

  • You need to study more.

Negative:

Subject + don’t/doesn’t need to + base verb

  • He doesn’t need to come early.
    (= It’s not necessary)

Question:

Do/Does + subject + need to + base verb?

  • Do I need to bring anything?

 

 2. Must

Used for strong obligation or logical deduction.

Affirmative:

Subject + must + base verb

  • You must wear a helmet.

Negative:

Subject + must not (mustn’t) + base verb

  • You must not touch that.
    (= It’s forbidden)

"Must not" ≠ "don’t have to"

  • You mustn’t go. (= It’s not allowed.)
  • You don’t have to go. (= It’s optional.)

Question:

Must + subject + base verb? (Rare, often replaced with “have to” in questions)

  • Must we leave now?
    (More natural: Do we have to leave now?)

 

 3. Should

Used for advice, suggestion, or mild obligation.

Affirmative:

Subject + should + base verb

  • You should eat healthier.

Negative:

Subject + should not (shouldn’t) + base verb

  • You shouldn’t stay up late.

Question:

Should + subject + base verb?

  • Should I call her?
