In this lesson, students focus on understanding how people motivate themselves and the techniques they use to stay driven. They listen to a radio phone-in where four individuals describe their methods for self-motivation, and they answer questions about what they are trying to achieve and how they maintain their motivation. Students practice active listening by identifying word clusters and specific phrases in fast speech, which helps improve comprehension of connected speech.

The lesson highlights how different personality traits can affect progress. For example, being easily distracted, disorganized, having low self-belief, or being overly self-critical can prevent individuals from maintaining consistent motivation. Students learn to match each personality aspect with the potential disadvantages of their chosen motivational method, such as methods being expensive, complicated, or time-consuming.

Additionally, students complete exercises to practice using prepositional phrases and idiomatic expressions related to motivation, such as run steam and stop, check, pat on the back, step out of our comfort zone, and lose faith. Speaking activities encourage students to reflect on situations where they might struggle with motivation, discuss strategies to regain it, and consider who they would involve for support or recognition.

Overall, the lesson aims to expand vocabulary related to motivation, develop listening skills to understand fast speech and word clusters, and improve speaking and reflection skills about personal motivation strategies and overcoming challenges.
