Comparative

A comparative is the form of adjective or adverb used to compare two things.

Look at thes pictures.

a.

Here we have a group of adjectives, we formed them to comparative by adding er

Note : if the adjective is from one syllable, add er + than

Example:

tall   :  taller

small : smaller

b      c.                  d.

Look at the example in picture (d):

Here we double the last letter then we added er .

because we have a vowel between two concenants.

*big : bigger

*fat : fatter

*hot : hotter

****************************************************************

Examples:

1.He is smarter (smart) than his brother.

2.My friend is happier (happy) with his mark than Mousa.

*************************************

If we have more than one syllable, we add more  + adjective + than

Example:

Sherlock Holmes is more famous than Ms Marple.

*Here (famous) is more one syllable.

*****************************************

Exceptions:

********************************************************

Remember : vowels are:

******************************************************************************

2. Superlative

We use superlatives to compare one person or thing to several others. For example,

*Paris is the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen.

This means that I’ve seen several cities and I consider Paris as the number one in terms of being beautiful.

If we have one syllable , we add the + adjective + est.

Example :

1.I am the tallest girl in the class. (tall).

*I f we have more than one syllable , we add the most + adjective.

2. Lions are the most dangerous in the zoo.
