LESSON 1A VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR

1) Will / Won’t (Future Predictions)

When do we use will / won’t?

We use will / won’t to talk about:

Predictions about the future
 Things we think will happen
 Future facts

 Structure

Positive:
Subject + will + base verb
People will live on the Moon.

Negative:
Subject + will not (won’t) + base verb
  Cars won’t use petrol.

Question:
Will + subject + base verb?
 Will people live on Mars?
Yes, they will. / No, they won’t.

IMPORTANT:

We use will + verb (NOT will to live )

2) Time Expressions for the Future

We often use will with:

  1.  next year
  2. in ten years
  3.  in 2050
  4.  by 2050 (before 2050)

Example:
In ten years, I will be a teacher.

By 2050, robots will do many jobs.

 Difference:

In 2050 = at that time

By 2050 = before that time

3) Watch Out – Be able to

Present ability:
We can travel anywhere.

Future ability:
We will be able to travel anywhere.

We do NOT say: will can
Correct: will be able to ✔

Structure:
Subject + will be able to + verb

Example:
People will be able to work from home.

 4) Difference Between Will and Going To

 Will → predictions (opinion)
I think robots will help teachers.

Going to → plans already decided
I am going to study English tonight.

 Quick Trick for Students

If it is:

A prediction → use will

A plan → use going to

Future ability → use will be able to
