A My favourite TV programme is on Channel 1 at eight o’clock four nights a week. It's called The South.

      a Which is a quote and which is a report? Sentence 1 is a quote and Sentence 2 is a report

      b How is the verb form in the report diff erent from the one in the quote? The verb form in the quote is Present Simple and the verb form in the report is Past Simple.

4 ‘I’ve made a decision.’ (Sami)

Sami said that he had made a decision.

5 ‘We’ll keep on trying, we won’t give up.’ (Fadia)

Fadia said that they would keep on trying, that they wouldn’t give up.

6 ‘Jaber took out the recycling and then left.’ (Noura to Lama)

Noura told Lama that Jaber had taken out the recycling and then he left.

7 ‘You have no idea what you’re talking about.’ (Laila to Hussein)

Laila told Hussein that he had no idea what he was talking about.

8 ‘I don’t like talking about other people but I’ve heard some news.’ (Amina to Nadia)

Amina told Nadia that she didn’t like talking about other people but that she had heard some news.

5 SPEAKING In pairs, report a conversation either from your life or from a TV programme that you watch. Use reported speech.
