The second conditional

4 Study the Grammar box and Watch Out! and in pairs create two statements using the second conditional

The second conditional

We use the second conditional to talk about:

• things that are unlikely or impossible to happen in the future (fantasies, unreal plans):

If I won first prize, I ’d be overjoyed. (but I almost certainly won’t win first prize)

• unreal situations in the present:

What would you do if you were me? (but you’re not me)

There are two parts to a sentence in the second conditional:

The condition                     The result

If + Past Simple,                  would + infinitive

If I saw someone fall, I would help them up.

WATCH OUT!

With the second conditional, we often use were instead of was after I, he, she and it, especially in written English or formal situations:

I would help your brother if I were you.

If it weren’t so difficult, I’d do it.
