Compound words Compound words usually consist of two words (two components) that may be written separately, with a hyphen, or as one word.
toothpaste; flashlight; go out; light green
- Both parts of a compound word receive stress.
- The primary stress (strongest stress) usually falls on the first part of the compound word.
- The second part also receives stress, but it's a secondary stress (less strong).
