LESSON 6B VOCABULARY:

The lesson focuses on the pronunciation of plural nouns ending in "s" and how it is pronounced in three different ways:

  • /ɪz/ (extra syllable): Example: boxes, houses
  1. /s/ (voiceless): Example: books, pets
  2. /z/ (voiced): Example: games, boys

1. Exercise 1 (Look at three ways of pronouncing the letter "s" at the end of a plural word. Listen and repeat the three sounds.)

Here, you need to look at the three different ways the "s" sound is pronounced in plural nouns and practice repeating these sounds. The three sounds are:

  • /s/ like in "books"
  • /z/ like in "games"
  • /ɪz/ like in "boxes"

2. Exercise 2 (Listen and repeat these three words. Match them with the three sounds from Exercise 1.)

You should listen to the words and match them with the correct pronunciation category based on their sound:

  • places/ɪz/ (because it has an "es" sound at the end)
  • sports/s/ (because the "s" is voiceless)
  • friends/z/ (because the "s" is voiced)

3. Exercise 3 (Listen to ten more plural words and write them in the correct column.)

For this part, listen to ten plural words and categorize them under the three different pronunciations of the "s" sound. For example:

  • /s/: museums
  • /z/: (Example word: friends)
  • /ɪz/: (Example word: boxes)

4. Exercise 4 (Listen and repeat. Practice saying these sentences.)

In this part, you need to listen and repeat the sentences, which are designed to practice the correct pronunciation of plural nouns:

  1. I like horses, birds, computers, and books.
  2. I've got two brothers, two sisters, two parents, and lots of friends.
  3. In my bag, there are headphones, sunglasses, pens, and keys.
  4. At the meeting, there were scientists, nurses, actors, and vets.
  5. After school, you can go to activity clubs, play sports, do extra lessons, and other things.

5. Exercise 5 (Write about one or more of your hobbies.)

Example response:
"I enjoy playing sports, reading books, and drawing pictures in my free time."
