WRITING | A Short Informal Message

In informal messages (to friends, family, classmates), we often leave out some words to make the message short and natural.
1️⃣ Leaving out the verb to be (am / is / are)
We sometimes remove am / is / are.
Full: I am so tired.
✂ Short: So tired!
Full: She is at home.
✂ Short: At home.
2️⃣ Leaving out subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.)
If it is clear who we are talking about, we can remove the subject.
Full: I hope you are OK.
✂ Short: Hope you’re OK.
3️⃣ Leaving out articles (a, an, the)
Full: I saw a movie yesterday.
✂ Short: Saw movie yesterday.
4️⃣ Leaving out determiners (some, my, your, etc.)
Sometimes we remove words like some.
Full: I bought some snacks.
✂ Short: Bought snacks.
5️⃣ Leaving out “there is / there are”
Full: There is a problem.
✂ Short: Problem here.
6️⃣ Leaving out conjunctions (because, and, etc.)
Full: I can’t come because I’m busy.
✂ Short: Can’t come. Busy.
7️⃣ Leaving out prepositions (in, on, at, for, etc.)
Sometimes we remove them if meaning is clear.
Full: See you at school.
✂ Short: See you school.
Sample Informal Message
Full Message:
Hi Ahmad,
I am at home today because I am sick. There is a lot of homework. I am not happy about it! See you at school tomorrow.
Short Informal Message:
Hi Ahmad,
At home today. Sick. Lots of homework. Not happy about it! See you school tomorrow.
