Stressed vs Unstressed

1. What is a Stressed Word?

  • A stressed word is a word in a sentence that we emphasize when we speak.
  • It usually carries the main meaning or important information.
  • Example:
    • “I can upload a photo.” upload is stressed because it is the main action.

2. What is an Unstressed Word?

  • An unstressed word is said quickly and softly.
  • It often includes small words like a, the, on, my, in, of.
  • Example:
  • “I can upload a photo.” I, can, a are unstressed; photo is stressed because it’s important.

3. How to Recognize Them

  • Stressed words usually:
  • Tell the main action or idea
  • Are nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs
  • Unstressed words usually:
  • Are small function words
  • Help the sentence but are not the main focus
  • 4. Listen and read. Are the coloured words stressed or unstressed? Then listen again and repeat. They are unstressed
