Audioscript

Have you ever been to Aqaba? If no, you should consider visiting it because it has many wonderful sites, and one of its greatest attractions is the Red Sea. There, one can experience the best diving in the world! The best time to go diving is September or October, during which the water is warm and the air temperature is not too hot. Also, around this time of the year  the fish life is a lot richer to spot sea turtles and explore the beautiful marinelife. If you go there in July or August, diving will be very uncomfortable. Therefore, since all the conditions in Aqaba are easy, diving is acceptable for every level, especially that the most diving centres in Jordan offer courses for everyone, whether they are first-time divers or professional ones. Now that you know all about Aqaba and the underwater world, you might want to start preparing for your diving holiday!

2 Listen to the report about diving in Aqaba. Check your answers to exercise 1.

READING

4 Read the following text about sea turtles. What kind of environment do you think sea turtles need to survive?

Sea turtles need warm water to survive.

Sea turtles are among the most ancient creatures in the world. There are seven species of sea turtles that can be found today and they are found in all waters that are warm. Since the Red Sea’s water in Aqaba is constantly warm, it is considered to be the place where sea turtles travel in search of food. All sea turtles have hard shells that protect them from predators. Their shells are also streamlined to help them swim through the water more easily and faster. Their colour differs depending on the species; they could be yellow, green or black. Unlike other turtles, sea turtles cannot hide their legs and head inside their shells because they have flippers that direct them smoothly while swimming. Those flippers are also built for digging in the sand. Most sea turtles eat small sea animals, such as sponges, jellyfish, snails and shrimps. Other sea turtles feed on sea plants and grasses, such as seaweed. Surprisingly, sea turtles can live up to 80 years and can weigh up to 200 kilogrammes!

Trip of a Lifetime

If you decide to travel on a boat trip to the Red Sea, it will be the trip of a lifetime. I spent five days there on a ship with professional divers and visitors just like me, and it’s been one of the best experiences of my life. One place I would recommend, if you plan on diving, is Aqaba in Jordan because it is one of the most popular dive destinations in the world. If you go to the Red Sea reefs, you’ll be able to see more than 200 soft and hard corals. Those reefs are the main source of food and shelter for the diverse wildlife that lives there, which includes a lot of different species of marine animals such as jellyfish, sponges and sea turtles. If you are the kind of person who loves beautiful scenery, then you won’t want to leave this place, especially that the water is exceptionally clear. So, if you have the time and money, you should really visit the Red Sea.
