Section 1: Grammar — Modal Verbs

The following modal verbs are used to express degrees of obligation, prohibition, and permission. Each form carries a distinct meaning and should be applied according to context.

Key Distinction

Mustn't expresses prohibition — the action is forbidden. Don't have to expresses absence of obligation — the action is optional but permissible. These two forms are frequently confused and must be carefully distinguished.

 

Examples in context:

— You mustn't put your feet on the ground. (It is not allowed.)

— You don't have to wear special clothes. (It is allowed, but not required.)

A mound or ridge of sand formed by wind action, typically found in desert regions or along coastal areas. Sand dunes provide the terrain required for sandboarding.

goalkeeper

noun — sport role

The designated player responsible for preventing the ball from entering the goal. In cycle ball, the goalkeeper is permitted to use their hands to defend.

surf (to surf)

verb

To ride or glide across a surface, such as ocean waves, snow, or sand, using a board or similar equipment. In the context of sandboarding, 'to surf' refers to descending sand dunes.
