LESSON 6A SPEAKING

1. Giving Good News

These phrases are used to introduce positive information or accomplishments.

  • Good news! (Direct and enthusiastic)

  • I’ve got some good/fantastic/great news. (Adds emphasis with adjectives)

  • I’ve just heard (the results of the Go Green! competition). (Used for news you just received)

2. Giving Bad News

These phrases use "softeners" to prepare the listener for something negative.

  • I’m afraid I’ve got some bad/terrible/awful news. ("I'm afraid" makes the delivery more polite)

  • I’m sorry, but...

  • Unfortunately,... (A formal way to start a negative statement)

3. Responding to Good News

Phrases used to show excitement or support for someone else's success.

  • That’s great/amazing (news).

  • Oh, wow!

  • Congratulations! / Well done! (Common for achievements)

  • I’m really happy for you. / Good for you! (Personalized support)

4. Responding to Bad News

Phrases used to show empathy or to minimize the person's distress.

  • That’s terrible/awful (news). (Validates their feelings)
  • Bad luck! (Common for minor disappointments like losing a game)
  • Oh, no!
  • Don’t worry. / Never mind. (Used to comfort someone or suggest the news isn't a big deal)
