Was (singular) Were (plural)
The past continuous is made from the past tense of the verb be (was/were) and the –ing form of a verb:
I was eating apples
He was eating apples
You were eating apples.
Negative form
(Wasn’t /weren’t)+ the –ing form of a verb:
He wasn't shouting
They weren't shouting
There was+ singular
There was a car in the street
There were+ plural
There were cars in the street
